Qantas drops regional routes from Melbourne
Qantas announced it is scrapping two underperforming regional routes out of Melbourne.
Flights to Wagga and Albury will come to an end from Sunday 1 March.
The airline says it is in response to weak demand.
“Despite efforts to stimulate growth, demand for flights has continued to decline, with many recent flights less than half full, and we’ve had to make the difficult decision,” an airline spokesperson said.
“All impacted passengers have been contacted directly and offered options, including refunds or alternative same-day flights via our Sydney or Brisbane services.”
Wagga flights to and from Sydney and Brisbane still sell well the airline says, and there’s ‘potential to add services in the future.’
Rex Airlines is the only other regional carrier connecting Wagga and Melbourne.
Qantas said the Albury to Melbourne route has been recently operating at less than 40% sold of available seats.
