Qantas engineering announcement today
Qantas has advised that a media conference will be held this afternoon by Chief Executive Officer Geoff Dixon and Executive General Manager Qantas Engineering David Cox.
While media speculation suggests Qantas will retreat somewhat from its previously expected hard stance on jobs, unions are prepared to take the airline head-on if things do not go their way.
The secretary of the Australian Workers Union, Bill Shorten, said he believed there was a close relationship between Mr Dixon and Mr Howard and the WorkChoices laws. “I’m not into conspiracy theories, but if it walks and quacks like a duck, it’s probably not a dog,” he said.
Mr Shorten warned of a furious reaction if Qantas moved jobs offshore. “We are going to talk to the public, we are going to remind them of our safety record. They will kill their brand. It’s going to be like feeding rat poison to the flying kangaroo.”
