Qantas expected to release delayed Sydney maintenance base decision in two weeks

It is reported that Qantas has completed its review of its narrow body maintenance division, currently based in Melbourne, following on the decision in March to move its wide-body heavy maintenance out of Sydney.

The carrier had originally said that the decision whether it would move the operation would be announced in September, but told maintenance workers waiting for the decision that it would be further delayed, with the decision now expected in the next two weeks.

It is not known what is causing the delay, but Qantas was quoted earlier this year saying that maintenance work would not be moved offshore but did not rule out it moving to Avalon, near Geelong, or to Brisbane.

The delay has hit maintenance worker morale in Melbourne with Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association Federal Secretary Steve Purvinas told media that members were badly affected by the uncertainty and it was remarkable they had still processed 50 consecutive aircraft on time, adding “Our members are concerned about their future and this seems to be a tactic adopted by the airline.”

Mr Purvinas added that said the Union was not aware of any facility in the Asia-Pacific that could outperform Melbourne, saying that “One of the options that has been discussed is the Avalon maintenance facility but they’ve been having no end of trouble getting some 737 freighter conversions out on time and Members from Melbourne have been down to assist with the last four or so checks they’ve done there on 737 aircraft because they can’t cope with the work.”
