Qantas given 15 days to pay $68m for rate fixing

An ABC report from Washington says that Qantas has been given 15 days to pay a $68 million fine in the United States for its part in a conspiracy to fix rates for international air cargo shipments.

Qantas has formally pleaded guilty in a Washington court to a single count of conspiracy to restrain trade.

The US Department of Justice had accused Qantas of trying to eliminate competition by fixing the rates for air cargo shipments between America and Australia.

The airline’s general counsel, Brett Johnson, told the court the Qantas Freight Division had admitted taking part.

Judge John Bates said it was a “very serious offence”, and fined Qantas $68 million, a figure which the airline had already agreed to in a plea deal.

Qantas is cooperating with an ongoing US investigation into the price fixing scam.
