Qantas says coup having little impact on Fiji bookings:
Qantas Airways Ltd said that further political instability in the Pacific island nation of Fiji had not had a significant impact on the sale of holiday packages.
But a Qantas spokesman said 35 Fiji holiday packages sold by Qantas during November had been cancelled.
“That is not a significant number given the total bookings taken each month,” the spokesman said.
“With regards to long-term effects, it’s still really too early to tell.”
Qantas would not disclose the average total number of Fiji holiday packages it sells in a month and does not fly directly to Fiji but has a code-sharing arrangement with Air Pacific, Fiji’s national carrier.
Australia Fiji Business Council executive director Frank Yourn said any downturn in tourist numbers to Fiji would hurt the country’s economy, especially sectors that provide services to tourists.
“The effect of that for ordinary people is quite serious because for every person who has a job in Fiji, there’s a whole range of people who depend on getting some ripple effect from that job,” Mr Yourn said.
Mr Yourn said tourism numbers were not yet reflecting the events in Fiji.
“The decline will accelerate because a lot of this happens in forward bookings rather than in bookings that are there today,” he said.
“But how long that will take to come through is unclear.”
Fiji’s military effectively took control of the capital Suva today in a move seen as an attempt to force the elected government out of office.
The Australian government has warned Australians in Suva to consider leaving, and said military checkpoints had also been set up in Nadi and Lautoka, in Fiji’s west, and the northern city of Labasa.
