Qantas sets 2027 date for Project Sunrise flight launch
Qantas has announced a tentative start for the highly anticipated Project Sunrise flights.
It says it will start the ultra-long-haul flights in early 2027.
CEO Vanessa Hudson said the first of 12 adapted Airbus A350-1000 aircraft will be delivered at the end of next year.
These are designed for non-stop flights to London and New York of more than 20 hours.
“We will need three aircraft to be able to have a daily service, either from Sydney to New York or Sydney to London. Then as the other aircraft come on, we’ll be able to fill out the network,” Hudson said.
Up until now nonstop London flights have only been possible from Perth, Western Australia.
The original start date was 2025 but has been pushed back a couple of times due to design revisions required to the aircraft
The first Airbus A350-1000 aircraft will be deployed on the short route to Auckland, NZ while it waits for a minimum three aircraft required for daily ultra long haul service.
