QF 747 emergency landing in India – all safe
Sources in India have confirmed that a Qantas 747 en route from Singapore to London carrying 389 passengers and crew made an emergency landing today at a Calcutta, India airport
The aircraft was granted permission to land at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata, India and landed safely, with all passengers safely evacuated from the aircraft and reported safe.
The aircraft touched down at 12.52pm local time with Air Traffic Control declaring full emergency procedures.
Some sources said there was an indication of smoke or a fire in the cockpit and others that the pilot saw smoke billowing from the rear of the aircraft. The exact reason for the emergency landing would be known only after a thorough examination of the aircraft.
Emergency crews were checking the aircraft which was also being refuelled and was likely to take off imminently an airport official reported.
