Racing New Caledonia – and helping the locals
Thee Transcaledonian is both a legendary running race and a programme aimed at raising public awareness of the challenges of public fitness in New Caledonia.
It crosses New Caledonia July 6-7, 2013.
For 22 years, the Transcaledonian has made its route with the help of the Melanesian local tribes.
It brings back to life the ancient traditional footways as it crosses the most beautiful countryside of Grande Terre, giving participants the opportunity to live through emotional encounters with the hidden peoples of New Caledonia, and also to uncover the amazing richness of the animal and plant life of Caledonia.
The Health Aware Association, a non-profit organisation, raises public awareness of health problems by organising events with the habitats and the people of the villages through which the route passes.
More than 600 participants divided into teams of three from New Caledonia, France and from nearby countries are expected this year.
Trekking fans, high-level athletes as well as keen walkers can sign up for the race.
