Rail firm on track for low cost fares
Rail operator Stagecoach is attempting to replicate the success of the low cost airlines by launching budget fares from London to the south coast.
From mid-November tickets bought online between Waterloo and Southampton and Portsmouth will cost between £1 and £10 with more than 3000 discounted tickets available each week. The cut price tickets will apply to off-peak travel and will not be available on Sundays.
The Independent said the new service, megatrain.com, follows the launch by Stagecoach two years ago of megabus.com.
“If you can offer prices starting from £1 it is within the budget of everyone,” a South West Trains spokesman is reported to have said. “We feel there is an untapped market with which we can fill the capacity of the rail market at these times.”
