Regent launches new Antarctica cruise route
Regent’s new 2008 Antarctica brochure enables guests travelling with the ultra-luxury cruise operator to follow in the footsteps of famed explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton – discovering the frozen wilderness of Antarctica in small, intimate groups.
Visitors will be able to see an array of unusual wildlife from marconi penguins to fur seals. In the second of the two itineraries to the Great White Continent, Regent offers an extended 14-night cruise making its maiden call at South Georgia Island; home to large colonies of king penguins and elephant seals. On the continent of Antarctica itself guests can also disembark and enjoy full days on the ice.
Both cruises will depart from Ushuaia at the tip of the South American continent on board Explorer II accommodating just 198 guests and call at the Falkland Islands, the South Shetland Islands and the Antarctica Peninsula.
One of the most fragile habitats on the planet, Antarctica is dominated by snow capped mountains, blue tinted icebergs and dazzling white snow fields stretching out as far as the eye can see.
Departing on the 19th and 30th of January 2008, at the height of Austral summer in the Southern hemisphere, the cruise will navigate the Antarctic Sound or “Iceberg Alley” where glaciers flow from the 10,000-foot Foster Plateau into calm waters and the surrounding cliffs are dense with nesting cape petrels, blue-eyed shags, kelp gulls and Antarctic terns.
A team of expedition staff and lecturers will be on hand to help guests make the most of their shore visits on Antarctica. These experts, which include marine biologists, naturalists and geologists will provide briefings on the Antarctic landscape, helping guests understand the natural wonders, wildlife, geology and history of the continent.
They will escort guests on excursions across the ice and discuss the day’s adventures at informal get-togethers at the end of each day.
Cruise only fares start at £4,584 (US$ 8,968) per person including a pre-cruise hotel overnight in Santiago, charter flights from Santiago to Ushuaia (to embark Explorer II), 11 or 14 night cruise, all meals and drinks, onboard entertainment, Zodiac landings on Antarctica and all gratuities. Return flights from the UK are additional. For further information or to request a brochure call 02380 628 280 or visit www.rssc.co.uk.
