Regional News South Wales Tourism icon passes away.
Anyone working in regional tourism in New South Wales, in particular in the western areas and further afield, will have very fond memories of Peter Handcock, former Regional Manager for Tourism New South Wales, who passed away on December 22 after a battle with cancer.
Peter in his usual style wanted no fuss or ceremony or any hassle for his wife Jackie and asked her to keep it low key, ensuring that he was cremated very quickly with the cremation taking place on December 23.
Peter [pictured in the Dubbo Visitors Centre in 2004] was the epitome of a man who lived by his contacts and for his friends, irrespective of whether they were Ministers, well known personalities or small business owners, and walking through any western NSW town with Peter was an experience, with “Hi Peter’s” coming from all sides of the street. If you ever needed to know about something or someone in regional NSW, you asked Peter and if he did not know, he would find out!
It was a great honour and pleasure to have worked with Peter at TNSW and benefited from his commitment, honesty, loyalty, contacts, friends and confidentiality, qualities not too frequently found these days I am afraid, but ones Peter lived by.
It was also a great honour to have been friends with Peter and I for one counted him as a true friend and will miss him sorely and will remember fondly the many conversations and hilarious times with him.
My, thoughts, as I am sure are yours, are with Jackie, his wife and Peter’s family and as I said to Jackie yesterday, remember Peter as the Peter that talked about her all the time and lived life to the full – that was Peter we all knew!
