Renaissance back from the dead
Defunct US cruise line Renaissance Cruises is set for a comeback after a mystery buyer acquired the rights to the name.
Several US travel agents have received emails from “friends of Renaissance Cruises” with the subject: “Renaissance Cruises is back from vacation”. The email claimed that Renaissance was being restructured in Fort Lauderdale.
The message is also repeated on the website renaissancecruises.com but there are no clues as to who is behind the operation. Rumours have circulated in the US that Renaissance founder and former chief executive Ed Rudner is involved, but this has yet to be confirmed.
Renaissance filed for bankruptcy last September. The majority of its ships were sold at auction to French firm Cruiseinvest and the remainder of its assets are soon to be sold off through a liquidating trust.
The Renaissance name and trademarks were sold through the US bankruptcy court in Florida to a company called Atx LLC for $50,000.
