Resolutions for the wired & weary
by Yeoh Siew Hoon
On the last day of the year, I am up with the dawn and thinking about the next 365 days. And I couldn’t resist making these resolutions.
1. I will not buy another gadget. I’d rather be a bloodhound than a gadget hound.
2. I will not sleep with my Blackberry, iPad and Kindle. The other day, I woke up to find my dog sleeping on my iPad. Thank goodness, the one-click buy function was not on.
3. I will text less, talk more. Bring back the art of conversation, I say.
4. I will use my smartphones to do only smart things. And I will remember at least one telephone number in my head so that if I lose my smartphone, I won’t be struck dumb. This inspiration came from my mother who, the other day, wanted me to call my brother and she rattled off his telephone number without consulting a device. Have a brain? Use it. Or lose it.
5. I will write longer emails – I don’t care what they say about email being dead and only for fuddie-duddies. You can spend hours on IM and the chatter goes nowhere. Man was not made to talk without thought.
6. I will send postcards – over Christmas, I found a new Korean stationery store that sells really cool things you can do with postcards and I predict young kids will find all this very novel and we will see a revival of written postcards and snail mail.
7. I will keep a written journal – go to any bookstore and you will see the humble journal making a comeback. Look at what Moleskine is doing with its product extensions. Besides, I need to do something with all those journals I got for Christmas.
8. I will buy more books so I can share them with my friends – Kindle makes me a more selfish reader. My house will become a library again.
9. I will buy more CDs so I can share them with my friends – iTunes makes me a more selfish person.
10. I will tell more stories and make more videos. Come on, YouTube is talking of buying a Web video production house, Next New Networks. Must be something there.
11. I will fly.
Remember though, someone said, “A New Year’s resolution is something that goes in one year and out the other.â€
Hail the new 11.
