Resort on high alert as hurricane heads to Mexico
A tourist resort is on maximum alert as Mexico prepares for a ‘highly dangerous’ hurricane.
Shelters have been prepared by the Mexican authorities for up to 30,000 people around the tourist resort of Los Cabos, in preparation for hurricane Odile.
In resort, the authorities warned people to stay off the beach, remain indoors and keep away from doors and windows, reports the BBC.
Officials said electricity would be shut off in the area as the storm hit to avoid damage from power lines if they came down.
At least 26,000 foreign tourists and 4,000 Mexicans were in the region, local officials said, and those in areas at risk of flooding were being evacuated.
Around 22 flights have been cancelled leaving some tourists stranded while other camped out in the Los Cabos international airport hoping to get out before the storm.
The storm is expected to hit the southern end of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula in the next 24 hours, according to the United States National Hurricane Centre.
Luis Felipe Puente, national coordinator for Mexico’s civil protection agency, said 164 shelters had been prepared for as many as 30,000 people in the state of Baja California Sur.
Storm experts said it was set to be the strongest hurricane to hit the southern tip of the peninsula since Kiko in 1989, which landed as a category three.
