Responsible tourism online guide for Gozo launched
The Ministry for Gozo, Malta Tourism Authority and responsibletravel.com combine to offer island tourism
The Ministry for Gozo in association with Malta Tourism Authority and responsibletravel.com have created a brand-new insiders’ travel guide to the small but perfectly formed island of Gozo in the Maltese archipelago.
Using tips and advice from local people, the guide is packed with authentic insights celebrating the island’s 45km of coastline, pristine sea and unique 7000 year old history. Whether you’re interested in places to stay, Gozitan culture and food, local activities and events, holiday ideas, or just advice on the best beaches to visit, the guide provides all the information with a local twist.
The multimedia guide includes video and podcasts from local people telling their stories, including a sculptor, a vineyard owner, and even a local beekeeper – all offering their unique experiences of life on the sunny island.
Some lesser-known facts on Gozo:
- Gozo is home to the oldest free-standing stone structures in the world, the temple of Ggantija in Xaghra, predating Stonehenge by an estimated 1,000 years
- The entire island is only 7 kilometres by 14 long!
- With more than 300 days of sunshine a year, even during the balmy months of winter and autumn, frost is practically unknown.
- Gozitan’s use a unique method handed down by their forefathers to produce olive oil using cold water, which allows them to collect the purest (and tastiest) olive oil. In fact it’s so good, locals believe that’s why they were invaded by the Romans so many years ago!
- The Azure window, an extraordinary natural stone arch in the protected area of Dwejra, is often immortalised in film and television, featuring in the 1981 classic ‘Clash of the Titans’ and the more recent HBO TV series ‘Game of Thrones’.
