Restrictions imposed as Delhi air quality at ‘fatal’ levels

Wednesday, 05 Nov, 2023 0

The air quality in Delhi and other Indian remains dangerously high with government officials imposing a series of restrictions.

The Central Pollution Control Board recorded air quality index (AQI) of over 480.

That is classified as potentially ‘fatal’ for people suffering respiratory or lung-related issues.

It is officially termed as ‘severe plus’ on the index.

The AQI is more than 80 times over the WHO healthy limit.

Sports events have been banned and it is impacting the cricket World Cup.

Bangladesh and Sri Lanka cancelled training sessions at the weekend.

There is some doubt over whether today’s match will take place.

Anti-smog guns have been placed beside major roads and authorities have been cracking down hard on illegal garbage dumping and burning.

Delhi’s National Zoological Park has also taken measures to protect animals with sprinklers in enclosures and adjusted diets to help animals cope with the toxic air.

Under strengthened measures this week, at least half of government and private office workers are required to work from home.

Also, certain heavily polluting trucks have been banned temporarily from entering the city.

Primary schools are to stay closed until 10 November while secondary schools are being encouraged to implement online at home classes.
