Rio hotel rates rise in anticipation of World Cup
It’s going to be a hot summer in Rio next year.
Hotels room blocks already are selling out for the 2014 World Cup, and apartment rates are already on the rise.
More than 600,000 foreign visitors and 3 million domestic tourists are expected, and hotel rates are expected to rise sixfold.
Already, some four-room penthouses in Ipanema are asking $150,000 for one month’s rental, CNN reports.
The city expects to berth six cruise ships to add to the hotel inventory.
The tournament will take place in June and July in 12 cities across South America’s largest country.
A study released by Embratur found that the average fan in Rio will pay $461 per night around the time of the World Cup, double the rate in Johannesburg in 2010.
