Rising fuel costs impacting Japan cherry blossom cruises

Tuesday, 31 Mar, 2026 0

Another niche tourism segment is taking a financial hit from surging fuel costs.

It is extending to small river boats taking tourists on cherry blossom cruises in Tokyo.

The CEO of operator Tokyo Waterways Kazuyoshi Harada says the Middle Est conflict is taking its toll.

“Since fuel consumption for us peaks during the busy cherry blossom season, the price hikes have been particularly hard on us.”

He said most book in advance due to limited demand, so the company is unable to raise prices to cover costs.

This Cherry Blossom season will cost the operator about ¥100,000 more, Harada said.
