Ryanair has been ranked the number one airline in terms of international passenger numbers by IATA in its new World Air Transport Statistics report.

The no frills, low-cost airline gets the top slot for carrying 79.65 million international passengers in 2012.

EasyJet is third after Lufthansa, carrying 44.6 million passengers, while British Airways came in at number six, after Emirates and Air France, with 31.3 million.

For overall passengers – domestic and international – Delta Air Lines was ranked number one with 117 millon passengers

Ryanair, easyJet and BA were ranked six, 11 and 18 respectively.

Ryanair’s Robin Kiely said: "IATA has once again confirmed that Ryanair is the world’s favourite airline with more international scheduled passengers than any other carrier.

"Even the combined traffic of EasyJet and BA is still less than Ryanair’s total, confirming that passengers can’t get enough of Ryanair’s guaranteed lowest fares, no fuel surcharges and number one customer service."
