Ryanair ticked off over advert
The no-frills carrier Ryanair has been warned not to “misattribute statistics in future advertisements” after it compared its performance figures with those of rival EasyJet.
According to Sky News, a newspaper advert placed by Ryanair read: “Ryanair beats easyJet every week for more passengers, cheaper prices and better punctuality,” adding in small print that the figures related to June 2004 and naming a source for the statistics as the Association of European Airlines (AEA).
But, following a complaint by easyJet, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) found that the AEA does not actually publish such statistics relating to either airline.
Sky further reports that Ryanair was also criticised by the ASA over another advert in which it featured a list of destinations and their serving airports, which were described as “close”.
These included Barcelona, which Ryanair serves through Girona and Reus airports. After complaints that the two airports were not close to the city, upheld by the ASA, Ryanair reportedly admitted its mistake and apologised.
