SAN ANTONIO RIVER WALK OPENED

Saturday, 19 Jul, 2009 0

The San Antonio Convention and Visitors Bureau have announced the completion of the first stage of the River Walk extension, with the addition of further extension plans as part of the project which will make this top San Antonio attraction the largest linear park in the nation.

The enchanting River Walk offers garden-bordered pathways along the San Antonio River and connects restaurants, hotels, shopping, attractions and historic sites including the famous Alamo where the battle for Texas’ independence took place in 1836. In addition to these many offerings is the newly opened Culinary Institute of America. Food enthusiasts can savour the flavours of Latino cuisines by taking a two-day Latino inspired cooking class at this premier culinary college.

With the first phase of this expansive extension now complete, the River Walk now connects the original downtown part of the river with the San Antonio Museum of Art and the historic Pearl Brewery.   The San Antonio Museum of Art is known for its antique collections and the 300,000-square foot Nelson A. Rockefeller Center for Latin American Art, which is the largest archive of its kind, with the 125-year old Pearl Brewer currently being redeveloped into an urban village along the river.

San Antonio is continuing to extend the River Walk to connect four of the city’s 18th century Spanish colonial missions, and is scheduled for completion in 2014 taking the River Walk up to 13-miles long.

Projected benefits to the River Walk area are to include the eco-friendly addition of 24,000 native trees, acres of native grasses, 113-acres of aquatic habitat and 300-acres of riparian habitat. Other projected benefits will include flood damage reduction, cultural connections and extensive potential for further development making a positive impact on the city’s economy.
