Explosion comes after assurances that terror group will not affect holidays

Another bomb believed to have been planted by Eta terrorists has exploded in Spain, just days after two blasts hit tourist resorts in the country.

A bomb exploded at the weekend at a car park outside Santander airport – and while nobody was hurt because the area had been evacuated, the airport building was damaged. Scores of people had to evacuated from the terminal to the runway; flights to and from the airport are expected to resume today or tomorrow.

The incident comes after many of the weekend’s newspapers reported how terror threats in Spain have hardly affected tourist numbers to the island. Despite the Basque separatist group’s warnings that foreigners should not visit Spain on holiday, and the Foreign Office’s warning that tourists should be alert, all operators appear to be running a “business as usual” service.

The Guardian quotes ABTA’s Sean Tipton thus: “Eta have always made it clear that they are targeting the resorts rather than the tourists and have given plenty of warning to allow the Spanish police to evacuate buildings. Eta wants to damage the tourism industry but they do not want to kill tourists.”
