Schiphol clarifies ‘no changes for UK travellers’ during EU transition period
Schiphol Airport has clarified there are no changes for UK travellers during the EU transition period after Twitter said it had ‘jumped the gun’ and was already directing British passport holders to non-EU gates.
A tweet, by Brexiteer Colin Browning, showed a picture of a queue of passengers on Thursday, with the words: "Absolutely disgusting service at Schiphol airport. 55 minutes we have been stood in the immigration queue.This isn’t the Brexit I voted for."
He added: "I spent more time at immigration than I did in the air getting to my destination."
Dozens of people responded, including finance journalist Frances Coppala, who said airports such as Schiphol appeared to have ‘jumped the gun’ by directing British passport holders to non-EU gates but noted the change would be implemented across EU countries from next year.
"I’m afraid it’s exactly what you voted for," she tweeted.
Schiphol clarified the confusion, saying the extra queueing time was caused when because new staff members were being trained, leading to longer queues than normal.
It said the initial tweet had ‘taken on a life of its own’, after the airport started trending on the social media platform.
