Schoolboy dies while ‘canyoning’ in Italy

A British schoolboy has died while on holiday in Italy after crashing into rocks while ‘canyoning’.

The 15 year old, whose name has not been released by police, was part of a group at the Lillaz waterfalls in the Aosta Valley taking part in the popular sport of climbing water-filled canyons.

He was diving with friends into one of the pools wearing a wetsuit and helmet.

"He didn’t surface after entering the water, and was pulled out unconscious by one the leaders of the group," Adriano Favre, head of the Aosta Valley Alpine rescue service told the Daily Telegraph.

"He was suffering from abdominal trauma. I think he probably jumped in feet first and a rock might have hit his stomach."

Rescuers arriving on the scene by helicopter spent over an hour trying to revive the boy using a defibrillator before he died.

Italian officials said more details of the incident would be revealed as the investigation got underway. The British group of canyoners reportedly returned on Sunday evening to a camp site near Villeneuve where they had been staying.

A spokesman for the British embassy in Rome said on Sunday, "We are aware of the death of a British national in Italy and stand ready to provide assistance".
