Scottish tourism’s wild ideas about wildlife

Wildlife and the natural environment will receive a higher profile in the Scottish Tourist Board’s new brand portfolio according to the recently appointed Head of Brand Marketing, Alistair Gronbach.

Speaking at the recent ‘It’s Wild!’ conference in Scotland, Mr Gronbach said that Scotland could become one of the world’s leading sustainable ecotourism destinations.

The ‘It’s Wild!’ conference focussed on opportunities for wildlife tourism in Scotland. The event was organised by the Tourism and Environment Forum, a partnership of public, private and voluntary organisations who are working towards making Scotland a more sustainable destination for visitors. The event also saw the launch of research on the wildlife tourism sector which revealed that the number of wildlife tourism businesses in Scotland had increased by 37% since 1997, suggesting that businesses are responding to the increasing interest in the natural environment by visitors.

VisitScotland plan to take an active approach to wildlife tourism in Scotland and with a member of staff now in post who is responsible for identifying opportunities to promote Scotland through its wildlife, the real work is beginning.

Mr Gronbach said: “VisitScotland has always been committed to the environment through the organisation’s support of the Tourism and Environment Forum and continuing to roll-out the Green Tourism Business Scheme. Diversity is a key strength of Scotland’s natural environment and we need focussed messages and products that meet visitors’ expectations.”
