Second Norwegian Joy cruise hit by illness outbreak

A second Norwegian Joy cruise has been hit by ‘a stomach related illness’, one week after an outbreak of norovirus-type symptoms.

Passengers disembarking at the Port of Los Angeles this weekend were met by paramedics.

Nineteen passengers were evaluated but all declined hospital treatment, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

It came a week after several passengers received medical treatment for suspected norovirus-like symptoms.

More than 100 passengers complained of illness during the cruise, although the source is still unknown, according to published data from the CDC.

The ship underwent increased cleaning and disinfection procedures although it seems it hasn’t had the desired effect.

"It raises serious concerns about the hygiene of this ship. If the ship is not cleaned to a point that ensures the health and safety of its passengers, it should not be allowed to leave dock," said Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn.
