Security breach at Heathrow

Sky News says it has uncovered major security lapses at London’s Heathrow airport after one of its reporters “repeatedly” managed to get access to restricted areas.

The Sky website states that the unnamed reporter managed to get into British Airways offices that contained confidential security documents including instructions on how to deal with bomb threats and procedures for dealing with hijackers.

The reporter also claims that he broke into a “secure” area and was able to get close to aircraft that would be flying just several hours later. He reportedly got into the restricted area from a viewing platform at Terminal 2.

A BAA spokesman is quoted as saying: “Safety and security are the top priorities at Heathrow. We are constantly seeking new ways to maintain an effective barrier between the landside and airside areas of the airport, and to remain alert to any potential vulnerabilities.

“On the basis of the information provided by Sky News, it would appear that there is room for improvement in this particular area of the airport and we have already taken steps to address that.”

BA reportedly stated: “Safety and security are always our top concerns and we are extremely concerned to hear that an undercover reporter has taken some documents from our landside offices at Terminal 1.

“We have launched our own immediate investigation into the allegations made against the airline to ensure that appropriate action is taken to avoid this happening again.”
