Security tightened in Tunisia as elections approach
Security is expected to be tightened in Tunisia this weekend as the country holds its municipal elections.
The UK Foreign Office has updated its travel advice for the destination in light of the elections, which take place on Sunday.
A state of emergency is in effect in Tunisia, imposed after a suicide attack on a police bus in November 2015.
It has been extended a number of times, most recently in March by another seven months.
Since the terrorist beach attack in Sousse in June 2015, in which TUI customers were killed, the UK government has been working closely with the Tunisian authorities to investigate the attack and the wider terrorism threat.
The FCO says the Tunisian government has improved protective security in major cities and tourist resorts.
But it added: "Terrorists are still very likely to try to carry out attacks in Tunisia. Security forces remain on a high state of alert in Tunis and other places. You should be vigilant at all times, including around religious sites and festivals."
