Several campers still missing after NZ landslide

New Zealand emergency services crews are still working to locate people missing after a deadly landslide devastated a campsite.

Two people were confirmed dead with several others missing.

Police superintendent Tim Anderson put the number of missing ‘in single figures.’

Emergency vehicles and diggers remain at the campsite near Mount Maunganui tasked with digging out earth and rubble but are hopeful people can be found alive.

Authorities are unsure of the exact number of potentially missing people due to some campers leaving the site in the aftermath.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand deputy national commander Megan Stiffler said it is a ‘complex and high-risk environment’ and the public was advised to stay away.

The area is popular with hikers and day trippers visiting its nearby sandy beaches.
