Shanghai Disneyland to break even next year

Walt Disney Co is targeting 2017 to break even on its new Shanghai theme park, announcing it has welcomed four million visitors in the first four months of operation.

Shanghai Disneyland officially opened in June this year and Disney CEO Bob Iger says he was surprised to see that about half of visitors hail from outside the Shanghai area.

"The fact that it’s so balanced leads us to believe that word of mouth on this and the intent to visit from well beyond Shanghai is very, very high," Iger told Bloomberg TV.

However Iger cautioned that achieving 10 million visitors during its first year of operation may be difficult due to likely lower seasonal demand.

The park last week announced that construction has begun on Toy Story Land, its seventh themed zone.
