Singapore Airlines mulling job cuts
Job cuts are looming at Singapore Airlines after the airline suffered its first quarterly loss for five years.
Speaking on the sidelines of the IATA meeting in Cancun, Mexico, CEO Goh Choon Phong said its ‘wide ranging review’ of the business could mean job losses as certain job functions may become ‘irrelevant.’
Some workers may need to retrain for different task within the business, but he said it is still too early in the review process to put a figure on possible downsizing.
"There will certainly be changes in the way we do things and staff will have to pick up new skills. Some of the current jobs would have to be redesigned because they may not be relevant anymore," he said.
A full business review started several months ago and promised ‘bold radical measures’ would be taken.
Another Asian legacy carrier, Cathay Pacific, announced it was culling at least 600 jobs in Hong Kong after posting its first annual loss in eight years.
