Singapore Airlines slashing global capacity as travel demand plummets

Tuesday, 18 Feb, 2020 0

Singapore Airlines is cutting capacity right across its global network in response to weak demand from the Covid-19 outbreak.

As the largest airline at a major transit hub like Singapore Changi, the airline has been heavily impacted by the downturn in travel across Asia and beyond.

Normally top performing routes such as Frankfurt, Jakarta, London, Los Angeles, Mumbai, Paris, Seoul, Sydney and Tokyo have been impacted, the airline said.

"We will continue to monitor the situation and make further adjustments as necessary," SIA said.

Flights cuts will last for the next three months.

It said there will be more than 700 flight cancellations on Singapore Airlines and SilkAir.

They are in addition to cuts already made on flights to China and Hong Kong.

According to an analyst, Japan and South Korea routes have seen the biggest downtown outside of Greater China.

"It’s not a surprise to see some cuts in flights, given the weak forward bookings that can be expected from the current environment," DBS analyst Paul Yong said.

The number of trade shows cancelled across the region and a drop off in business travel  have both impacted transit traffic through Changi Airport.

Singapore tourism leaders said last week it expects tourist arrivals to fall by about 30% this year.

Although no deaths have been reported, Singapore has one of the highest numbers of confirmed covid-19 cases outside China with 81.
