Singapore Changi Airport closing Terminal 2

Singapore’s Changi Airport is closing Terminal 2 for 18 months.

Transport minister Khaw Boon Wan told the Singapore parliament T2 will close to take advantage of the lull in passenger traffic.

It is in the middle of upgrading works, and by closing completely, it will finish the work a year earlier than planned, said Khaw.

We will save on running costs – for the airport operator, retail tenants, airlines and ground handlers," Khaw said.

Airlines will be reallocated gates across the remaining terminals.

Passenger numbers have plunged by about 90% since the covid-19 pandemic started to impact travel.

Khaw said it could feasibly close three of the four terminals and still handle the current passenger level but must be ready to meet increased passenger traffic when the post-pandemic recovery kicks in.

However Khaw reckons a ‘full recovery this year is unlikely.’
