Singapore hotel tycoon detained in corruption probe
Singapore authorities arrested a prominent hotel tycoon in a corruption probe.
Ong Beng Seng, boss of Hotel Properties Limited was questioned and later released on bail.
It is tied to an investigation by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) of Transport Minister S. Iswaran.
Iswaran was placed on administrative leave last week by the Prime Minister.
Ong was required ‘to provide information in relation to his interactions’ with Iswaran, Hotel Properties Limited said in a stock exchange filing.
Hotel Properties Limited owns the Four Seasons and Hilton hotels in Singapore as well as hotels in the UK, Australia and the US.
“Mr Ong is cooperating fully with CPIB and has provided the information requested,” his company said.
Ong also owns Singapore GP, which helps organise the Formula 1 race each year in Singapore.
Unlike much of the Southeast Asia region, corruption involving government officials is extremely rare in Singapore.
