Six million Chinese heading overseas for Spring Festival holidays

Sunday, 25 Jan, 2017 0
The upcoming Spring Festival holidays will see more than 6 million Chinese travellers venture overseas, according to the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA).

That would be a record high, with Thailand, Australia and the US among the most popular destinations.

"Some 6 million Chinese will travel abroad during the weeklong holidays from January 27 to February 2, which will become a global Golden Week," the CNTA said in a statement.

The UK and Spain has also seen an upturn in confirmed online bookings for Lunar New Year travel, it said.

China’s current air pollution problems has spurred an increasing number of people to seek fresh air overseas.

"Especially during winter when air pollution is serious in parts of the country, citizens are more willing to escape smog… A considerable proportion of travellers even go to foreign islands to run away from the cold climate and smog," the China Tourism Academy said.

The holidays from January 27 through February 2, will see clogged roads and full airplanes as hundreds of millions of people head home.

The Civil Aviation Administration of China estimates about 58.3 million people will fly, which is up about 10% from last year.

China is the world’s biggest source market for overseas travel with 128 million people taking international trips in 2015.
