Skiers die in Utah avalanche
Four skiers have died in an avalanche in Utah while four others were rescued in a backcountry ski area.
Salt Lake City PD said the avalanche in the Wilson Basin area happened as two groups skied the mountain at the same time.
"Four of those skiers were able to dig their way out. All four of the remaining are deceased," said Sgt. Melody Cutler, a police public information officer.
Cutler told CNN the area is a popular backcountry trail but had ‘been under very high-risk avalanche conditions recently.’
The Utah Avalanche Center had tweeted that the area was prone to ‘dangerous avalanche conditions.’
Wilson Basin is about 20 miles from Salt Lake City.
The accident follows an avalanche near Park City, Utah a week ago which claimed one life and in Colorado and New Hampshire where a further four skiers died recently.
