Skiing going well beyond simple snow

Sunday, 09 Nov, 2005 0

Skiing is more popular than ever and many areas are expanding to become more appealing to all age groups.

“Shopping, restaurants and entertainment are becoming increasingly important in catering to family vacations, and to family members who aren’t into skiing,” said Keri Hone, director of events at the National Ski Areas Association.

Skiers are also increasingly looking for other activities outside of the ski slopes.

The luxury market is particularly “getting hot enough to melt the snow off any mountain,” said Forbes.com.

Some clubs such as Spanish Peaks in Big Sky, Mont., are charging members up to $1.3 million to join exclusive ski clubs that include golf courses and other amenities.

Americans spent $10 billion on sky vacations last season, according to the Colorado-based RRC Associates, a market research firm.

Last year’s almost 60 million skier visits represented the fourth-busiest ski season ever in the US.

An estimated $1.6 billion will be spent on skiing over the next three years.
