Smallish Myrtle Beach able to accommodate even larger conventions

It has miles of beachfront, but is often viewed as a smaller meeting market. CVB officials in Myrtle Beach, SC, however, point out that the area is big enough to be able to accommodate about 80 percent of all meetings held in the US.

“We have the capability to hold meetings of most any size in our area,” said Kim DaRoja, convention sales manager for the area’s CVB.

Myrtle Beach has about 90,000 hotel rooms. Groups as large as 5,000 attendees can be accommodated. The Myrtle Beach Convention Center measures 250,000 square feet.

Area recreational amenities included renowned golf courses and several well-known resorts such as the Ocean Dunes/Sand Dunes Resort and Conference Center.

The area’s biggest attraction, however, is the 60 miles of beach known as the Grand Strand. Its boardwalk is about as famous as Atlantic City’s.

The Myrtle Beach Airport about ten minutes from the convention center is undergoing a US$130 million expansion due to be complete in 2012. It will mean more direct flights, especially from Canada and Europe, both growing markets for the area.

The CVB has one person assigned to focus Europeans to the area as an alternative to Florida.
