Snow arrives just in time for ABTA campaign

Sunday, 06 Dec, 2011 0

Ski resorts welcome snowfall after weeks of dry weather as ABTA launches a new ski campaign.

Yesterday resorts in Austria and Switzerland were transformed from green to white.

France, Italy and Andorra also had significant snowfall while Norway and Sweden had snow but still less than expected at this time of year.

The United States and Canada also saw snow while German and Bulgarian resorts have yet to open for the season.

More snow is expected from tomorrow with a number of French resorts expecting anything from 10 to 40cm.

The Ski Club Great Britain website said: “It has been great news in numerous European resorts which finally, after weeks of dry spells, have received anything between a light dusting and 30cm of the white stuff.”

Ski Solutions managing director, Craig Burton says: “This is the massive snowfall that everyone has been waiting for, and our phone lines have been hotting up as news gets out.”

ABTA’s ‘Get Fit for Ski’ campaign is promoting ski insurance, suggesting exercises and offering health and safety tips.

It follows research that only 41% check their insurance before skiing putting them at risk of expensive medical costs.

Together with the Foreign Office and Ski Club Great Britain, ABTA has developed a ‘winter sports checklist’ with advice and tips.

“Preparing before you go can help prevent injury and ensure you don’t miss out on the fun.

"Additionally, having the right equipment, knowing your limits when it comes to après ski and buying appropriate insurance, will all help your holiday go smoothly,” said Nikki White, ABTA’s head of destinations and sustainability.
