Software flaw led to potential ‘serious incident’ on flight from Birmingham

A software glitch on a TUI flight led to a potentially serious safety issue. The Air Accidents Investigation Branch said the flight from Birmingham airport to Majorca massively  miscalculated its weight ahead of take-off.

All passengers with a ‘Miss’ title were classified by weight as children. That led to the plane taking off 1,200kg heavier than actually recorded in the pilot’s log.

Investigators said the glitch was ‘a simple flaw’ as it was programmed in a foreign country where the title ‘Miss’ is used for a child and ‘Ms’ for an adult female.

The thrust used for the departure was less than it should have been, although the ‘safe operation of the aircraft was not compromised’ the AAIB said.
