South Korean snorkeler found dead on Gili Trawangan, second remains missing
A South Korean tourist has died and another is missing after they went snorkelling off the coast of Indonesian island Gili Trawangan.
Lombok police said the man’s body was spotted on a beach by another traveller.
The victim’s 19-year old female friend is also missing.
The two had left their Gili T hotel in the late afternoon to go snorkelling nearby.
Police suspect they may have had difficulty in strong currents and been swept away.
The undertows in the narrow strait between the islands of Gili Trawangan and Gili Meno can be notoriously strong and have claimed the lives of a handful of tourists in recent years.
A rescue team is continuing to search for the woman and a South Korea consular representative has been despatched to Lombok to assist.
Gili Trawangan is still very much in recovery mode after last month’s earthquakes with only a small percentage of hotels open and accepting guests.
There are currently just a handful of tourists on the island in what would normally be the last few weeks of an extremely busy high season.
