Southampton residents book twice as many cruises as anywhere else in UK
Southampton residents booked more than double the number of cruises than the residents of any other town or city in the UK last year, according to Carnival.
It said that 3.5% of all cruises booked in the UK were by residents of the Hampshire town, which is the UK’s busiest cruise terminal and home to a number of world class ships, including the Queen Mary 2.
London residents made the second highest number of cruise bookings, followed by those living in Bristol.
Nottingham, Sheffield, Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, Leicester and Leeds made up the rest of the top 10.
Southampton, London and Bristol similarly made up the top three in 2014.
The Mediterranean was the most popular destination, with the Canary Islands second and Caribbean third.
Carnival CEO David Noyes said: "In many ways Southampton is the home of UK cruising so it’s fitting that its residents are the most dedicated. And such is the demand within the city it doesn’t look like losing its crown any time soon.
"Overall there were 5% more cruises booked in the UK among our top 10 towns and cities so cruising is growing in popularity. It’s particularly interesting to see areas with limited maritime history or coastal links making up our top 10 and goes to show the increasing appeal of this wonderful holiday option."
