Southwest Airlines is launching a nonstop weekly service from Pittsburgh to New Orleans from next spring.

Allegheny County Airport Authority announced the new Sunday flight will commence March 19, 2017 and operate through May 7, 2017.

This will be the 17th destination out of Pittsburgh for Southwest, and the airport is hopeful it proves a hit with local flyers.

"They’re going to see how it performs," airport spokeswoman Alyson Walls said.

Southwest will face off against Allegiant Air which currently operates two nonstop flights a week on the route
