Southwest Airlines opposes NFL stadium plan near Las Vegas Airport

Southwest Airlines has come out against a possible new NFL stadium under consideration close to Las Vegas Airport.

Southwest Airlines executives wrote to Clark County Commission chair Steve Sisolak opposing the plan,

"A stadium, whether open or domed, located less than half a mile from the ends of two of McCarran’s major runways will restrict operations at McCarran International Airport, and will erode safety, security and capacity at the airport," said the letter, penned by Southwest vice presidents Bob Montgomery and Capt. Craig Drew.

Apart from the added traffic congestion on game days, light and noise pollution are also concerns for the airline.

The 42-acre site close to McCarran Airport is just one of several being considered for a possible NFL franchise which is being led by Las Vegas Sands casino company.

Sands is hoping to persuade the Oakland Raiders to relocate to Vegas.

"There are several sites on the table, including this one. We’re not locked into a particular site,"  and we anticipate there’s going to be dialogue on each of these sites," Sands spokesman Ron Reese said.

However Sisolak says Southwest’s opposition as a dominant carrier at the airport could be key.

"For Southwest Airlines to come out and say they’re in opposition to that site, and the chief pilot to say he’s in opposition to that site, the five words, "please consider an alternative site," ring pretty solid with me," Sisolak told local media.
