Southwest announces new routes from Dallas Love Field
Southwest Airlines has announced a line-up of 15 new routes from Dallas Love Field Airport as a law restricting the number of flights from the airport is due to expire.
Starting from October 13, the carrier will add non-stop services to Baltimore, Denver, Las Vegas, Orlando and Chicago, followed by other routes including Atlanta, Los Angeles, New York and Phoenix the following month.
In 1979 a federal law was enacted which restricted non-stop flights to just nine states from Dallas Love Field in order to protect the interests of Dallas Fort Worth Airport.
The law will expire in October – the same day Southwest’s new services take off.
In recent months Southwest has been upgrading its facilities at the airport in anticipation of the new flights with new departure gates, passenger lobby and ticket desks.
The new flights will be available for booking from May and expected to lead to more competitive fares, at least in the short term.
"We’re going to see introductory pricing, which American Airlines will be forced to match," said Rick Seaney of FareCompare.com.
The new flights were also hailed by Phillip Jones, CEO of the Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau.
"It’s probably one of the single biggest things to happen for the convention and visitors industry in Dallas, ever," he said.
