SPAA to produce report on Scottish independence
The SPAA is producing a report on Scottish Independence following a debate on its impact on the travel industry.
Representatives from ‘Better Together’ and ‘Yes Scotland’ campaigns as well as SNP and Labour MSPs debated the subject yesterday in Glasgow’s Grand Central hotel.
In response to travel-related questions from the floor, there was no agreement about the future of Sterling in Scotland, the position of the European Union, border control or passports.
But a more coherent system of consumer financial protection would be negotiated – working closely with the UK – claimed the ‘Yes’ campaign.
‘Yes Scotland’ chief executive Blair Jenkins and MSP Annabelle Ewing spoke of opportunities independence would bring – citing the economic strength of smaller nations such as those of Scandinavia.
While the ‘Better Together’ supporters Iain McGill and MSP James Kelly highlighted the uncertainty – for the UK economy and international financial markets and the unnecessary duplication of institutions and services.
Although the Scottish Government has confirmed that APD would be cut by 50% in the first term of an independent parliament in Scotland, ‘Better Together’ questioned where the money would be replaced from, suggesting tax rises or cuts to services.
A detailed report on the Independence Debate will now be circulated to SPAA members.
