Speed campaign ‘driving tourists away’
An aggressive campaign aimed at catching speeding motorists is driving tourists away from a popular holiday destination and has incurred the wrath of hoteliers and tourism bosses.
Police in North Wales have reportedly issued a massive 20,000 speeding tickets in the last six months following a crackdown by the area’s chief constable Richard Brunstrom and the introduction of mobile speed cameras.
According to the Daily Express, even Brunstrom’s own daughter – and 12 of his team – have been caught in the trap. But now, hoteliers are complaining that he tactics have driven tourists away and are demanding a meeting with the police chief to sort out the problem.
David Williams, chairman of the Llandudno Hospitality Association, reportedly told the newspaper: “People are getting in touch from other parts of Britain to say they won’t come to North Wales because they don’t want to risk their licence. Quite apart from tourist organisations, shopkeepers are being told the same thing by visitors. Now I am afraid the national perception is of a zealous and aggressive speed camera policy, with no leeway given.”
However, chief superintendent Anwyl Williams, of North Wales police, told the newspaper that the campaign had led to a 35 per cent reduction in those hurt or killed in car smashes, adding: “That is a very powerful selling point to any marketing of North Wales as a safe environment for you and your family on holiday.”
