Sporting star enjoys Sofitel style
Many great sporting stars have made the Wentworth Sydney their home during visits to Australia, and the latest is Cypriot tennis giant-killer Marcos Baghdatis.
While he didn’t conquer ice-man Roger Federer in the final of the Australian Open, he was greeted as a champion when he checked into the Sofitel Wentworth for some well-earned R&R before returning to Europe.
Baghdatis was impressed to know that some of the world’s greatest tennis players had preceded him to Sydney’s hotel icon, including Billy-Jean King, Martina Navratilova, Jimmy Connors, Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe.
Fortunately, he did not follow too closely in McEnroe’s footsteps, as the ‘super-brat’ of tennis had to be ejected from the Wentworth after a bout of ‘unsporting behaviour’ in the 1980s.
In contrast, the amiable Cypriot charmed fellow guests and staff alike as he rested up after the most draining two weeks of his professional career.
Sofitel Wentworth GM (pictured), Geoff York, said he was looking forward to welcoming him back next year – as the winner of the Australian Open.
