Straits of Gibraltar tunnel plan
Plans are afoot to build a tunnel linking Spain and Morocco, with the aim of completing the project within 10 years. According to a report in the Daily Telegraph, the two countries have agreed to start building the tunnel, which will run under the Straits of Gibraltar. The tunnel, which will be based on the Channel Tunnel between England and France, will reportedly be more than 25 miles in length, with around 17 miles running under the sea. At its deepest point the tunnel will be 1,300 feet below sea level, the newspaper reports, with the Spanish mouth of the tunnel at Punta Palomas, around 25 miles west of Gibraltar, and the Moroccan end at Punta Malabata, near Tangiers. The Telegraph states that the two countries have committed some GBP18 million to researching the project over the next two years.
