Stranded British tourists await “rescue” flights
Thousands of British tourists still stranded in Florida following the devastation caused by Hurricane Frances could fly home today after airlines laid on extra flights.
Some 6,000 British travellers were stranded after airports across the state were closed by the hurricane at the weekend.
But now, ITV.com reports, Thomas Cook and Virgin are both laying on extra services; Thomas Cook reportedly has four planes ready in Orlando, while Virgin has added four extra flights our of Orlando, to try to clear the backlog.
Orlando’s Sandford Airport is still closed this morning but, the website reports, is expected to reopen later today.
Hurricane Frances is still affecting northern parts of Florida while, as reported by News From Abroad yesterday, the next hurricane is lining itself up and could also hit “the Sunshine State”.
Hurricane Ivan was last reported to be approaching the Caribbean island of Barbados, with some reports suggesting that it could reach Florida within a few days.
